Positive You is a creative course which helps people with a learning disability to be confident and to have good self esteem. The course is designed and delivered by DSL member Leah Jones.
Leah says “When I went to school I didn’t have any confidence at all, I used to talk through my Mum and when someone asked me a question I would look at my Mum to answer for me. At the time I felt like I hid in a shell and that my opinions didn’t matter. I used to be shy at the thought of looking at people in case that they didn’t like me or I just used to doubt myself back then. Thankfully that’s no longer the case.
“I joined Halton Speak Out which is a Self Advocacy Group that helps people with learning disabilities to speak up for themselves. I learnt how to do this with their help and learnt all about my rights. During the Positive You course you will learn all of this too.”
Leah’s Positive You course aims to help with…
- Your Confidence
- Your Self Esteem
- How to become more Assertive
- Answering the question …..Who am I?
- Communicating with others
- And hopefully Overcoming some, if not all of your barriers
Leah says she is hopeful the end result will be your careering forward in your life in the way that you choose leaving you finally in control.
Leah and Jade (who helps Leah with her venture) will be adapting the course for new parents who have a child with Down’s syndrome for them to take part in the course. Leah says “I am very passionate about this because when I was born there was no information for my parents, I have always wanted to give something back that’s positive for other Mums and Dads who have a child with Down’s syndrome.”
